Pilgrimage Cycling Camino Primitivo

Arrival in Oviedo and check-in at your hotel. Take the opportunity to visit the Gothic cathedral dedicated to San Salvador, an important saint to whom many pilgrims express their devotion. Enjoy the lively atmosphere of Oviedo's charming historic center with many cafés, restaurants and cider bars.

In the morning you start cycling at San Salvador Cathedral in Oviedo, you follow the Jacobean copper shells through narrow alleys in the city center, then out into the green Asturian countryside. Paved roads, old footpaths and country roads take you past quiet villages and through rolling countryside.

Today's route begins with a challenge: 350 m ascent to reach Grado and another 200 m before you arrive at Cornellana and San Salvador monastery (from the 11th century). From here you follow a route along paved roads and narrow inner streets. On the way you pass the village of Salas, where you can visit the Museum of Prerromanic Art located in the old castle. Today's bike ride ends in Tineo, a historically significant town on the Camino.

Start the day by visiting the Romanesque church and Obona monastery. These monuments, partly in ruins, formed part of an important cultural and intellectual center for centuries. From here the road leads you past several churches and chapels up to the Lavadoiro pass at 812 meters altitude before you descend to Polo de Allande, a charming little Asturian town. You stay at a hotel famous for its regional cuisine.

A cycling day that starts tough with a 625 meter climb to Puerto del Palo, the mountain pass that divides the forested Allande area and the more barren southern mountains. After that you can calmly roll down a full 35 km to Lake Grandas and then cycle the remaining 4 km uphill to Grandas de Salime. Grandas is a pleasant town with a Romanesque church and an interesting ethnographic museum.

Another day that starts uphill to Alto del Axebo Pass (475 m up to 1030 m) before you roll down to Fonsagrada. You have the opportunity to extend today's stage with a detour to the beautiful villages of San Martin and Santa Eulalia de Oscos, famous for their architecture.
Once you cycle into Galicia you leave the mountainous area behind and come to a rural landscape with many picturesque small villages.

A long but pleasant stage where you have the opportunity to fully enjoy the Galician landscape and its traditional stone and wood buildings. At the end of the day you reach Lugo where the city center was declared a national historic monument in 1973. This mainly due to the impressive walls from the 2nd century which also merit as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit interesting buildings such as the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, the baroque town hall and the palace. You stay at a good hotel in the historic city center.

Today you have time to visit the most important monuments in Lugo and enjoy the city's atmosphere before getting in the bike saddle. From Lugo onwards, the Camino Primitivo connects with the more popular French Way (Camino Francés) somewhere between Palas de Rei and Melide. You can choose between several routes, between 32-51 km long, to reach Palas de Rei and your accommodation in a Casa Grande in the countryside.

Since today's stage is short you don't need to rush off too early in the morning. Enjoy a slower pace, take a detour from the Camino and cycle past the beautiful Castle of Pambre. When you pass Coto you soon notice that there are suddenly more pilgrims along the way, which means you are now starting to approach Santiago. Tonight you stay near the village of Arzúa in a typical "Pazo", a cozy and quiet oasis perfect for recovery.

On your last day you share the route, landscape and atmosphere with other pilgrims as you approach Monte del Gozo (where pilgrims first get a glimpse of Santiago de Compostela) and then down to St James Cathedral. Accommodation at a charming hotel in the center.
