Hiking the Classic Amalfi Coast

Accommodation in Amalfi/Atrani

Today's hike begins in Amalfi. An ancient staircase takes you up towards the small village of Pontone where you have a beautiful view over Amalfi on one side and Atrani on the other. The area offers several lovely picnic spots, all with dramatic views over the coast. Then you hike into the "Valle del Mulini", the valley of the watermills with its lush greenery and ancient mills in an almost fairy-tale landscape with several beautiful waterfalls. Via lemon groves you hike back to Amalfi where you have time to explore the charming town. Time approx 4-5 hours.

You take a local bus up to Ravello, one of the more exclusive villages along the coast and a beloved artists' town for centuries. Visit the magnificent Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone with their beautiful buildings, gardens and their unique view over the Gulf of Salerno. Then hike down through vineyards and lemon groves, on paths and steps via the small village of Castiglione to Atrani. The last stretch to Amalfi offers a beautiful view over the town. Time approx 4.5 hours.

Accommodation in Amalfi/Atrani

From Amalfi you walk along the oldest hiking trail in the medieval maritime republic of Amalfi, "Maestra del Villagio", an old path from the 800s. You pass the small villages of Lone and Vettica before reaching the impressive monastery of Santa Rosa. You continue via the lovely little village of Conca dei Marini where the trail begins to descend towards Furore with its charming little harbor. From here you go uphill again along the "Via dell'Amore". A final stretch through forest and vineyards takes you to Praiano where you stay for the next two nights. There is also the possibility to go down to Praiano's small harbor, Marina di Praia. Time approx 6 hours.

Accommodation in Praiano

From the hotel you walk through the streets of Praiano up towards the small church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. From here you hike on a good trail above the village into the Praia valley, a beautiful green valley with vineyards hanging on the cliffs. An ascent up via the church of Sant'Alfonso and the beautifully situated cave of Santa Barbara takes you to the beginning of the famous Sentiero degli Dei - the Path of the Gods. After a stretch with unforgettable panoramic views over the entire Amalfi Coast, all the way to Capri, you begin to descend along centuries-old steps to return to Praiano. Time approx 5 hours.

Accommodation in Praiano

Stroll through the picturesque streets of Praiano. Along an old pilgrimage route you then hike upwards towards the beautifully situated monastery of San Domenico. Feel free to rest for a while before continuing upwards until you again reach Sentiero degli Dei. Through a landscape with fantastic views you come to the small village of Nocelle. After another spectacular valley you reach the small village of Montepertuso and from there it's just a short hike downhill to Positano which is considered one of Italy's most beautiful villages. You stay within walking distance of the beach. Time approx 4.5 hours.

Take a local bus up to Montepertuso where you start a beautiful hike along Positano's upper valley. You follow ancient paths through forest and come up to Santa Maria al Castello, an old fort that defended the valley between Amalfi and the Sorrento side. From here you can admire both the Gulf of Salerno and the Gulf of Naples. For those who wish, it is possible to climb up to Sant'Angelo, the highest mountain on the peninsula. Otherwise you continue through the forest back to Montepertuso. Along an old donkey path you then return to Positano. Time approx 4.5 hours.

After breakfast the trip ends. Return by boat/bus to Salerno to take the high-speed train to Rome or boat/bus to Naples if you are flying from there.
