Hiking - The Best of Algarve

Meet at the airport and private transfer to Tavira (30-40 min). Tavira is one of the most beautiful towns in the Algarve, located on a hill by the small Gilão River. Depending on your arrival time, you can visit the old town, which was founded by the Phoenicians and fortified by the Moors during the Middle Ages. From the São João da Barra fort, built in the 17th century, the trail runs along the lagoon in Ria Formosa Natural Park. Sandbanks and barrier islands form a unique ecosystem between land and sea, governed by the rhythm of the tides. Thousands of birds love this area during their migration between Europe and Africa. The village of Cacela Velha, built on a fortified cliff, has an exceptional view over the entire coastline all the way to Spain and the fantastic beach on Cabanas island (swimming is possible depending on season and tides). Transfer (30 minutes) to the village of Santa Catarina in the wooded hills. From hills to valleys, this hike lets you discover the rural life of the Algarve: olive groves, almond trees, strawberry trees, some vineyards, cork oaks, carob trees and beehives for honey. The scents of aromatic plants like rosemary, Iberian lavender and large cistus enhance the hike. "Norias", wells and mills, bear witness to activities from the past. A 45-minute transfer to the start of your hike, a postcard-like beach. The route continues westward along the wild coastline to the small port of Sagres via beaches and coves, which invite a swim. You pass through the village to reach the fortress of Sagres, an important maritime monument where a large wind rose bears witness to the great scientific navigation research during the 15th century, encouraged and financed by Henry the Navigator, Prince of Portugal.

A private transfer takes you to Carrapateira, a fishing and surfing village in the heart of the Vicentine Coast Natural Park. You cross a flowering dune ridge to reach the small Bordeira River and the long beach of the same name. The hike continues along the eroded coast, where, surprisingly, some storks still manage to build nests by the sea, a phenomenon unique to the Vicentine. You return to the village of Carrapateira where you can include a visit to the small "Terra e Mar" museum dedicated to traditional agriculture and fishing. Transfer back to Sagres.

This hike takes you through wild heathlands, home to aromatic herbs, and along the colorful cliffs to the "promontorium sacrum", the southwesternmost point of Portugal at Cape Saint-Vincent. You are at the edge of the world! During migration periods, hundreds of birds swarm across the sky, and every year a birdwatching festival takes place in Sagres. Inside the lighthouse you'll find a small maritime museum that is well worth a visit and ends this hike in style. Private transfer (1 hour and 30 minutes) to Faro.
