Hiking on Karpathos

Arrival at Karpathos airport and transfer to Pigadia (included). There is an opportunity to hike up to the church Agios Kyriaki in the afternoon.

Accommodation in Pigadia 

After breakfast you have a transfer (included) to the northern part of the island. Throughout the entire journey you have fantastic views over the sea. If you want, you can walk the last 5 km to Diafani. Once there, you have two possible hikes to choose from down to the beach.

Today there are two different options depending on which day of the week it is, as well as whether it is high or low season. 

Low season (Tue, Thu or Sun) & high season (Thu or Sun):
You start by boarding a small boat, a so-called Kaiki, which in about 30 minutes takes you to the secluded beach Forokli which can only be reached on foot, by jeep or boat (boat trip included). Usually you are alone on the beach. From here you walk back to Diafani on a beautiful path along a riverbed, even during summer water flows here. If you are here during spring, the floral splendor is striking.

Low season (Mon, Wed, Fri or Sat) & high season (Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri or Sat):
A short boat trip takes you to the uninhabited island Saria just north of Karpathos. There you will find an information board with several hiking trails that are all well marked and you can choose one of them or just relax on the beach. The island is rocky and volcanic and you will find beautiful bays and ruins. 

Accommodation in Diafani

You leave Diafani and go inland via an authentic kalderimi (cobblestone path) that takes you to the farming village Avlona. Here time has stood still and the land is cultivated by hand in a very traditional way. After a break at a small taverna you continue along an old path towards the ancient city Vrykous (Vroukounda). The city is now abandoned but the ruins and chapel make it a fascinating place. You return to Avlona and continue to the mountain village Olympos. This village with 450 inhabitants is a museum in itself that has preserved an old-fashioned lifestyle where primitive customs still play a major role.

Accommodation in Olympos 

Today you do a short circular hike in the surroundings of Olympos. During the hike you get a good understanding of how the local population works in the fields. Before you leave, you have plenty of time to stroll around and explore this impressive little village with its narrow alleys, charming small shops and hidden buildings.

Accommodation in Olympos 

The hike from Olympos to Spoa is the most impressive on this trip. You walk along the central parts of Karpathos mountain range, several times you see the sea on both sides of you. From Olympos you walk along a well-preserved Kalderimi down to a fertile valley. Enjoy wonderful views over the mountains and the dramatic coastline. The last part of the hike goes downhill, along a stone path, to Spoa where you can relax at a local café while waiting for your taxi transfer (included) to Lefkos where you stay the last two nights.

Accommodation in Lefkos 

Today's hike takes you to the mountain village Mesohori. On the way you pass an archaeological site from Roman times. Then you go uphill on a kalderimi along the slope of Mount Profitis Ilias. After lunch at a local taverna in Meshori, you can ask the owners to drive you back to Lefkos if you don't prefer to walk.
