Brtonigla is known for its family-owned wine cellars and olive oil producers – there are plenty of opportunities to stop and taste the local life.

After a few hours of hiking, you reach Buje, a small town on a hill with beautiful views over terraced fields and wine landscapes. The loop concludes along the old railway Parenzana, now a lovely trail for hikers and cyclists. Overnight in the Buje area.

20-25 km, 510 m up, 570 m down

Along the way you pass the village of Livade, known as the world's center for truffles. Here you can taste and buy truffle products before heading towards Motovun. The mighty hilltop town rises before you and the reward when you arrive is unforgettable views and an evening in this medieval gem.

Day 4: Day 4 Hiking from Oprtalj to Buzet

8-18 km, 490 m up, 700 m down

Breakfast

The day starts with a transfer to the picturesque little town of Oprtalj, from where the Istrian Mountain Trail takes over. The path leads down into the forest, past the village of Sv. Ivan and on to Sv. Lucija with its beautiful church.

You pass small villages and get fantastic views over the Mirna valley before the trail goes past the ruins of Pietrapelosa castle. Then an aqueduct awaits and a climb towards Mali Mlun. Finally you reach Buzet, today's destination, with its cobblestone streets and cozy restaurants.

Day 5: Day 5 Hiking to Hum - the world's smallest town

12.5-25 km, 340-480 m up, 140-480 m down

Breakfast

Today awaits one of the trip's highlights – the hike to Hum, the world's smallest town. You follow the river through forests and past small waterfalls with natural pools. At Kotli you encounter old watermills and natural pools – a perfect place for a break.

The trail continues through abandoned villages with traditional stone houses before you see Hum's church tower rising in the distance. Here you can settle down at the local "konoba" and enjoy authentic Istrian dishes. Back to Buzet you follow the mistletoe trail – a beautiful loop with history and symbolism along the way.

6-15 km, 30-780 m up, 380-1690 m down

After breakfast, a transfer takes you to Poklon, the pass between the mountains. Here today's adventure begins: a hike up to the top of Učka, Istria's highest mountain (1,401 m). From the observation tower at the summit, the panorama is magnificent – you can see the entire Kvarner Bay, the Istrian Peninsula and on clear days all the way to the Alps and Venice.

Then a long descent awaits through oak and chestnut forests all the way down to the sea and the coastal town of Lovran. Here a dip in the Adriatic Sea awaits or a stroll along the classic Lungo Mare – the 12 km long seaside promenade that connects the towns on the riviera.

Day 7: Day 7 Departure from Lovran

Breakfast

After breakfast, it's time to say farewell to Istria. Perhaps you'd like to stay a few extra days by the sea – otherwise the journey home awaits, full of memories from green Istria.
