Hiking in the Heart of Gran Canaria

Arrival and taxi transfer to the first hotel in Agaete, on the island's rocky northwest coast. The hotel, which has a pool, is located on the outskirts of the town, surrounded by banana and orange plantations.

Accommodation in Agaete

After breakfast you begin the first hike directly from the hotel. You walk towards the village of San Pedro where you start walking uphill along Camino Real to Montaña Bibique. From here you have fantastic views over the Agaete valley. You then continue to Mirador de la Paloma at 850 meters altitude from where you can see over several valleys. Follow the mountain ridge downwards to Puerto de las Nieves where you take a bus or taxi back to Agaete.

A technically easy hike, which begins along a quiet paved road with fantastic views and then follows historic trails up into the evergreen forest Pinos de Galdar. You continue down via Cruz de Tejeda to the highest village on the entire island: Tejeda, beautifully situated on a terraced slope with both Roque Nublo and Bentayga in sight. The ascents are long and steep at times, especially the section through the pine forest, on vertical trails with lava gravel. The descent is more gradual, along a rocky footpath that zigzags along slopes and through some fruit orchards and vegetable gardens. You can shorten the route by asking the taxi to drive you 2 km further uphill at the start. The only stop along the way is at Cruz de Tejeda where there are 2 restaurants.

This hike takes you through the terrain around Roque Nublo which may not be the highest peak on the island but is certainly the most visible as you can see it regardless of where you are on the island. You start the hike directly from the hotel and make your way via a zigzag trail towards the summit whose volcanic origin becomes clearer the higher up you go. On the way back you follow another trail, through peaceful forest down to a ravine where you can take a bus back to Tejeda.

The ascent up to the Altavista summit (1378 m) on the edge of Tamadaba nature park is easy but interesting as it provides fantastic views over Gran Canaria, Tenerife and El Teide, Spain's highest peak. You start the day with a transfer to Degollada del Sargento and are picked up at the end of the hike in Artenara, while you wait for the taxi you can enjoy a drink or lunch on a terrace.

Accommodation in Tejeda

After a short transfer to La Culata at 1,225 meters altitude you begin hiking up over la Cumbre towards the green, northern part of the island. The first part takes you up to 1,620 meters. Then you follow the mountain ridge for an hour with fantastic views over Gran Canaria's highest peak Pico de las Nieves (1,951 m). The way down follows trails and roads to La Lechuza where your next accommodation with pool awaits you.

Accommodation in Vega de San Mateo

A hike through the ravine north of La Cumbre where you are met by the very varied vegetation in these barrancos, where all possible kinds of fruit trees - papaya, avocado, banana, pineapple, vegetables and sweet chestnut trees grow. If you feel like a more relaxed day you can take the bus into Las Palmas where you can stroll around its fine historic city center, visit Santa Ana cathedral, Casa de Colon and Museo Canario.

The trip ends after breakfast with taxi transfer back to the airport.
