Hiking in the Azores - Faial & Pico

Day 1: Arrival to Silveira

Taxi transfer from the airport on Pico to your first accommodation on the southern part of the island. If you arrive early, you will have plenty of time to try to spot a whale in the sea from this special nature hotel or, if weather permits, relax by the swimming pool.

Day 2: Hiking around Picos southern coast - 16 km, +360 m/-845 m

In the morning a transfer will pick you up to go to the start of the hike, just above Silveira. Since it is Portugal's highest mountain, the Pico volcano, which is 3251 meters high, will follow you along most of the route. The second part of this route follows the coastline back to the hotel and shows some of the best preserved secrets on the island's southern coast. Several hiking options to choose from.

Day 3: Caminho dos Burros - 9 km, +100 m/-800 m

Today awaits a journey to the central plateau on Pico island. Your path leads you down towards the island's northern coast, where you can enjoy a spectacular view over Pico mountain and the island of São Jorge. The road takes you through an enchanting forest that is so memorable it feels like something from a fairy tale. Your day ends at a unique beach, not with sand, but covered with smooth stones whose shapes have been created by the ocean's waves, where the taxi awaits you.

Day 4: Lagoa do Capitão - 8.5 km, +25 m/-770 m

A morning transfer takes you to the start of the hike while your luggage continues to your next accommodation in Madalena. A fantastic hike from Lake Lagoa do Capitão down to São Roque, first along red gravel roads but then downhill through a fantastic forest. To avoid a long and demanding descent, it is better to choose the second option. The taxi picks you up at the end of the hike to go to the new accommodation.

Day 5: Hiking among vineyards - 8.5 km, +100 m/-100 m

On your last day on Pico island, the taxi picks you up at the hotel and drives you to the starting point for the hike. A simple route along the island's eastern coast between World Heritage listed vineyards. This route ends at the harbor in Madalena. Boat to Horta on Faial island. A taxi picks you up at the harbor in Horta to drive you to your next accommodation.

Day 6: The Caldeira - 13 km, +150 m/-700 m

After a 30-minute transfer you arrive at Caldeira. With its 2 km width and 500 m depth, it is the highest point on Faial island and in good weather offers clear views over Graciosa, São Jorge and Pico islands. The route goes along the edge of the crater until it begins to descend along a red gravel road through the forest. A Levada (water channel) will guide you before you climb up to another crater: 'Cabeço do Fogo'. A final descent through 'Reserva Florestal de Capelo' takes you to the picnic area near Capelo, where the route ends.

Day 7: Capelinhos volcano & lighthouse - 12.6 km, +200 m/-300 m

Today you continue with the final part of the official "10 Volcão route" to Capelinhos lighthouse. On the way you will see several other crater formations before reaching the monogenetic volcano of the Azores: Capelinhos, which had its last eruption in 1957. At the visitor center you can learn all the history about this unique place. Continue your hike along the southern coast to Varadouro and relax at the natural swimming pool. Return to the hotel in the afternoon.
