Hiking in southern Tuscany

Arrival in Siena and check-in at your hotel. Enjoy the city's beautiful historic center with Piazza del Campo and Duomo. Stroll around the small alleys and soak up the atmosphere in this Italian gem.

After breakfast you begin your wonderful hike along Via Francigena through the Tuscan landscape. You walk through agricultural countryside whose color palette varies from green and yellow during spring and summer to ochre during autumn. You pass through the small medieval village of Cuna and the walled Lucignano d'Arbia along a characteristic cypress avenue just before you reach Monteroni d'Arbia.

Today you walk through a hilly landscape in the heart of Crete Senesi, an area covered with clay that never ceases to amaze. With its distinct gray tones it feels like you're walking on the moon. Today's destination is Buonconvento, one of the most beautiful small towns in Italy and you stay just outside at an agriturismo with fantastic views over Crete Senesi and the Val D'Orcia valley.

Today you make a detour from Via Francigena as you make your way through the fantastically beautiful landscape of Val d'Orcia. You climb up through vineyards to one of the trip's highlights, the walled town of Montalcino, famous for its full-bodied Brunello wines.

Today you have the opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful buildings in Tuscany, the former Benedictine monastery Sant'Antimo. Masses in Latin are still held here every day. Today's hike ends at the small village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate where you will be picked up and driven to San Quirico d'Orcia which is located on a small hill. The transfer is scheduled at 4:00 PM, if you wish for earlier or later pickup you must contact the transfer company at least 2 hours in advance. There is no guarantee that the time can be changed.

Accommodation in San Quirico d'Orcia 

Today you can do a shorter hike of about 5 km to the fine spa town of Bagno Vignoni with its hot springs. You can then book a transfer that takes your luggage and picks you up in Bagno Vignoni and drives you to Buonconvento train station. If you don't want to do this hike you can book a transfer directly from San Quirico to Buonconvento train station for onward travel.
