Hiking in Picos de Europa

Today's hike begins with an ascent from Arenas to Poo de Cabrales. Here you have a beautiful view over Picos de Europa. A beautiful hike, especially in early summer when the meadows are full of flowers in bright colors. There is an option to do an easier hike at a lower altitude. Time 4.5 hours (3.5 hours).

The day begins with a short shared transfer to Tielve, one of the most authentic villages in this part of Picos. Hike to Valfriu where they still make the famous local cheese, Queso de Cabrales. Gradual ascent through beautiful landscape with greenery and flowing water to a pass at 1240 meters. Then it goes down to Sotres which at 1050 meters altitude is one of the highest located villages in Picos de Europa. Time 4 hours.

Circular hike through the eastern part of the Picos massif. A limestone landscape with sharp peaks and bottomless chasms. Colorful alpine flora along the cliffs. On this hike there are great chances to see the wild animals and birds that live in the area.

Day 5 and 6 you can choose between 4 different hikes from Sotres depending on weather and your personal preferences.
Option 1: To Vega de Urriellu at an altitude of 2000 meters at the foot of Picu Urriellu and back. Through meadows and forests to the nearby village of Tresviso. Up to 1650 meters altitude through a glacial valley surrounded by sheep, horses and cows.

Option 2: Peaceful hikes on countryside trails near the hotel.

You leave Sotres behind and hike along peaceful trails up to the Pandebano pass. Go downward along an old hiking trail through meadows and low vegetation to Bulnes, an authentic mountain village that can only be reached on foot or by cable car (since 2001). Take the train down through a tunnel to Poncebos or extend the hike through an impressive ravine. Then take the bus (not included) to Arenas de Cabrales.

The trip ends after breakfast
