Hiking from coast to coast in Crete

Arrival in Vamos on your own or with pre-booked transfer. Spend the afternoon strolling through the picturesque village. 

Accommodation in Vamos

A hike of about 4 hours through the agricultural landscape of Apokoronas. You pass several small villages on the way to the coastal town of Georgioupolis. Beautiful views, traditional churches and western Crete's oldest olive press await you on this first hike.

You hike from Nippos in a green, lush area with cypresses and olive groves. In the background are the Lefka Ori, covered with snow in winter and spring. After the hike you will be driven by taxi to your next accommodation on the Askifou plateau. Hiking time about 4 hours.

Accommodation in Askifou

Today you have an exciting mountain hike ahead of you. You hike up to 1300 meters altitude and see even higher peaks in the distance. There are no villages in this area but you may encounter the occasional shepherd along the way. The way back goes along a beautiful trail, partly through forest where you occasionally see out over the Askifou plateau. Hiking time about 6 hours.

Accommodation in Askifou 

At the end of today's hike you have reached Crete's southern coast! Again, a short transfer from the hotel takes you to the village of Imbros where you can get some supplies at the mini market, before you enter the second famous Cretan gorge: the Imbros Gorge. You will walk for about two hours along a rocky riverbed with loose stones and rocks alternating with easier sections. At the end of the gorge you come to Komitades where you can relax and have lunch at one of the tavernas. Then you continue your hike through agricultural fields and over the Sfakiano gorge until you reach Chora Sfakion, which is located by the Libyan Sea. You can end the day with a refreshing swim. Hiking time about 4 hours.

Accommodation in Chora Sfakion 

From Chora Sfakion you go up via the Ilinga gorge to the authentic village of Anopolis. Here you meet the local population and have the opportunity to learn how to make Sfakiana pitta on your own (a type of pancake with fresh cheese and honey). This gives you energy for the remaining part of the hike where you take a beautiful trail down to the hidden purple village of Loutro. Along the hike you have beautiful views over the sea and Loutro. Hiking time about 6 hours.

Accommodation in Loutro 

Via a steep zigzag trail you revisit Anopolis. You then continue up to Aradhena, located on the edge of the impressive Aradhena gorge. A spectacular trail takes you down into the gorge which you follow until you reach the coast. The last stretch you follow a coastal trail that takes you back to Loutro.
If you want, there is the possibility to instead take a shorter trip via the small village of Livaniana.
Hiking time about 7 hours (or the shorter trip 4 hours).

Accommodation in Loutro

The trip ends after breakfast and you travel back by ferry to Chora Sfakion and from there local transport to Chania or Heraklion airport.
