Cycling in Bordeaux - The Médoc Peninsula

6 days / 5 nights

5 Breakfasts, 2 Dinners included

Day 1: Arrival in Pian Medoc

Arrival at Bordeaux train station or airport and taxi transfer to Le Pian-Médoc (specify where and when you arrive when booking). You will settle into your first accommodation and receive your bicycle and roadbook that you will follow in the coming days.

Day 2: Cycle La Route des Châteaux

25-40 km, 60 m up

Breakfast, dinner

The route from Le Pian-Médoc is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the area. You start by cycling through the vineyards of Margaux and Haut-Médoc, past some of the most famous châteaux. Renowned wine and spirits producers line the route and every village and every château gives the wine lover something dreamy to behold. Feel free to stop in small river ports like Saint-Julien and imagine how the old barges once transported wine barrels along the river.
The tour ends with overnight stay, dinner and breakfast at a charming accommodation in Moulis or Margaux

Day 3: Cycle between wine and river to Pauillac

50-60 km, 120 m up

Breakfast, dinner

After a hearty breakfast you roll out of Moulis for a wonderful cycling day through famous wine regions, among rolling hills covered with vines and across the species-rich wetlands that separate them. You also discover the history of Médoc through remains such as the archaeological site of Brion in Saint-Germain-d'Esteuil, Château de Castera, the monastery in Vertheuil and Fort Médoc, built by Vauban. The route follows the well-known château road "Route des Châteaux", famous for its wines and the unusual architecture of certain châteaux.
You finally reach Pauillac, the capital of Médoc. With its 18 Grands Crus Classés and its charming little harbor, this is an obvious highlight, with famous châteaux like Latour and Lafite Rothschild. In the afternoon sun you are welcomed to a charming guesthouse in the middle of the vineyards where dinner is also served.

Day 4: Cycling towards the sea

62 km, 200 m up

Breakfast

After the wetlands, the meeting between forest and sea takes over. Hourtin Plage with its wide coast and sand dunes is a paradise whether you take a refreshing swim or not. Then you cycle on marked trails through the fragrant pine forest, through a protected nature area with rich and varied flora and fauna. Lagune du Contaut is a perfect place for a picnic. Behind the sand dunes hide Médoc's large freshwater lagoons. You cycle along Lake Carcans-Hourtin, one of France's largest natural freshwater lakes, as well as along the coast's beaches. From Carcans you continue towards Lacanau via the Cousseau forest. The lake, paths and cycle routes lead harmoniously to the hotel, sheltered by pine trees between lake and sea.

Day 5: Cycling to Haut-Médoc

53 km, 60 m up

Breakfast

You start the day in a wild and nature-close landscape, through forest, along the lake and past small picturesque beaches. The green cycle path between Lacanau-Océan is built on the old railway line. It goes straight through the forest where the pine trees form a corridor, sometimes with salty and fresh wind from the sea. It is beautiful and safe cycling. Halfway there is an area with tables, benches and a fountain – a shady and pleasant place to rest and feel the pleasant buzz in your cycling legs. Towards the end of the day you reach Le Pian-Médoc and are welcomed back to the same hotel as the first night. The circle closes where it began – in the heart of Médoc.

Day 6: Farewell to the cycling trip through Médoc

Breakfast

Taxi transfer is included to Bordeaux train station or airport (specify location and time when booking the trip). We can also suggest two lovely extensions:
