Cycling at the Bay of Kotor & Lake Skadar

Today's route takes you to the Balkan Peninsula's largest lake, Skadar. After about 1 km you turn onto the old road that connects Cetinje with Rijeka Crnojevića. The road goes steadily downhill for almost 16 km before you reach Rijeka Crnojevića, which today is a sleepy village with some inviting restaurants where you can advantageously take a break before cycling on. With renewed energy you then cycle further along the lake and then uphill for about 3 km until you reach Virpazar. There will be some other minor climbs, which will often be rewarded with wonderful panoramic views over the lake. Virpazar is the center of Montenegro's most famous wine region, where the famous Vranac wine is produced. This wine pairs perfectly with the fish specialties from this lakeside town.

Before the construction of the railway tunnel through Mount Rumija in the late 1960s, Podgorica was connected to the port of Bar via a narrow railway track. Today you will follow the former railway track that takes you comfortably uphill. From there you enjoy an exciting downhill ride, with a fantastic view over the Adriatic Sea. You end today's tour by riding through old olive groves to Stari Bar, where you will spend the night. Stari Bar is the old town of Bar, located in picturesque surroundings on the slopes of Mount Rumija.

Cycle through groves of olive trees, some over 2000 years old. On a secondary road above the Adriatic Sea you will ride around Bar, Montenegro's "olive oil capital". The tour offers very beautiful views over the Adriatic Sea. Today's cycling ends right at the walls of Ulcinj, Montenegro's southernmost city with its charming medieval style and a fantastic setting on a cliff above the sea.

A transfer takes you to the start of today's cycling adventure where you get to explore Skadar Lake National Park. You first follow a narrow road above the lake. You can expect to pass through vineyards, villages and a fantastic view over the lake with the dramatic Albanian Alps in the background. Around the village of Ostros you cycle through majestic chestnut groves that are over 100 years old. In Godinje, a traditional wine region, you will have the chance to regain your strength before the final climb on the way to Virpazar. Once you arrive in Virpazar, you will be picked up by a transfer that takes you to your accommodation in Lovćen National Park.

Today's tour takes you directly from the mountains to the sea along the famous Austrian-Hungarian serpentine road, with the most beautiful panoramic views over the Bay of Kotor. You start from your accommodation in the national park, and for the more well-trained there is the possibility to cycle the last 200 meters of elevation to Petar Petrović Njegoš mausoleum. You then continue downhill on the "serpentine road" for almost 30 km towards the Bay of Kotor. Along the way there will be several good places to stop to capture the amazing view. The route ends directly at the old town of Kotor where you will spend the night.
