Cycle the Romantic Road

The journey begins in one of Germany's most beloved medieval towns. Rothenburg is the epitome of German romance with half-timbered houses, city walls and alleys that feel like they're taken from a fairy tale. In the evening you can join the classic walking tour with the night watchman – a perfect introduction to the city's history.

You first cycle towards Schillingsfürst where the magnificent baroque castle towers above the town. The journey continues through rural surroundings to Dinkelsbühl, beautifully situated in the Wörnitz valley. The colorful town center is perfect for an evening stroll and there are plenty of inns with Franconian specialties.

Today you reach Nördlinger Ries, one of Europe's most interesting meteorite crater landscapes. Nördlingen is a former free imperial city with Germany's only completely preserved, walkable city wall. The view from the church tower "Daniel" is a real highlight. Don't miss the geological Ries crater museum.

The route goes via Harburg where the castle watches over the valley from its high cliff. You continue towards Donauwörth where the river Wörnitz meets the Danube. The magnificent Reichsstraße dominates the town center and here you'll find both the cathedral and the well-known Café Engel. The town also has the charming Käthe-Kruse doll museum.

After breakfast the journey ends, unless you treat yourself to an extra night or two, or want to continue the cycling trip to Füssen.
