Cycle from Trieste to Pula

On the first day of your trip, you travel on your own to Trieste in northeastern Italy, not far from the border with Slovenia, where you check in at our selected accommodation. There is much history to discover here and the city's location contributes to an international and multicultural atmosphere. Don't miss a walk along the waterfront to admire the neoclassical architecture, the white beaches and the harbor with its well-maintained sailboats.

The first cycling day begins with a welcome meeting at 9:00 AM when you receive maps and all necessary information. Then it's time to set off along the Parenzana, a cycling path that follows a disused railway track all the way to Croatian Porec. The track crosses the border into Slovenia, where you follow the coast past the resort towns of Kopan and Piran, which for a long time belonged to Venice. On your way south, you pass the salt mines of Secovlje, which is also a very interesting area for birdwatchers. The stage ends in Buje on the other side of the Croatian border.

The second cycling day begins downhill to the coast and the Savudrija lighthouse, one of the oldest in the Adriatic Sea and according to legend built as a private love nest for Count Metternich. The route continues to the historically very interesting town of Umag, which was founded as a summer residence by an Italian nobleman. Here the facades of the houses bear witness to the Venetian splendor of the past. On the way back towards Buje, vineyards and olive groves spread out and there is an opportunity to stop and taste the local muscat wine.

After breakfast, which is best enjoyed on the terrace overlooking Istria's rolling landscape, you leave Buje to cycle today's stage to Motovun. The trail takes you past small tunnels and old bridges and offers many beautiful views. During the day you pass among others Grožnjan and Završje, two charming villages with medieval origins, before reaching Motovun, a walled city with an outstanding location high up on a 277-meter high hill.

The fourth stage of the trip offers pleasant cycling through scenic surroundings down towards the coast. Take the opportunity to stop and taste the region's delicacies. The area is known for among other things wine, honey and olive oil. During the afternoon you reach Porec where you can visit both the famous Euphrasian Basilica from the 6th century as well as the city's Roman forum and noble palaces. The city also has several wine cellars where you can learn more about the region's malvasia and teran wines.

Today you will follow Istria's mythical coast and pass among other places the romantic fishing village of Vrsar, the deep Kontija forest and the ruins of the medieval town of Dvigrad, which according to legend was wiped out by the plague as a result of a curse. During the afternoon you arrive in beautiful Rovinj, a Mediterranean town halfway out to sea where you can enjoy exploring the winding alleys and admiring the palaces from the nobility's golden age.

After breakfast it's time to begin the trip's final cycling, which initially goes through the ornithologically very interesting Palud area. Then you pass coastal Fažana which is protected from the sea by the archipelago in Brioni National Park and continue towards Pula, Istria's largest city. Pula is spread across seven hills and like Rome has an impressive amphitheater. Here you can also see the Arch of the Sergii from the century before Christ and let yourself be enchanted by Pula's charming older districts.

The trip ends after breakfast when it's time for check-out and the journey home. You travel most easily from the international airport in Pula (transfer can be arranged for a fee).
