Cycle from Algarve to Andalusia

Transfer from Faro to your accommodation in Tavira (approx. 40 min). Depending on when you arrive, you might have time to discover this charming Algarve town, known for its decorated facades, traditional doors, windows and roofs, as well as its preserved eastern beaches. Possibility to take a boat to Tavira island and its long beach.

You cycle along the banks of the Gilão river on a small road that then crosses the fruit orchards of orange, lemon and carob trees. A break allows you to discover the "well of hell", a deep pool created at a waterfall, a true subtropical paradise. The tour crosses the inland and passes through the charming villages of Santo Estevão, Santa Luzia and the beach at Barril.

After a stop at the colorful market in Tavira to buy fresh and local products, the coastal paths go along salt flats, the channels of the Ria Formosa nature park, through fruit orchards and pine forests towards Fuzeta, a small fishing port on a sandy beach at the edge of the lagoon with turquoise water. The return to Tavira is through small inland roads, in the "barrocal" with its farms, gardens and fruit orchards. Also take the opportunity to pause in the charming village of Moncarapacho.

A tour along the coast via the "ecovia", a comfortable and well-equipped cycle path. Cacela Velha is one of the most beautiful places in the Algarve, a proud bastion on its cliff overlooking the lagoons and sandbanks of Ria Formosa; a show that changes with the tides and light. The roads and small paths of the ecovia lead to Castro Marim, a town protected by two fortresses, one medieval and the other from the 18th century. You follow the Guadiana river, the border river with Spain, to arrive at Vila Real de Santo Antonio. On the other side of the river you can see the small Andalusian town of Ayamonte.

A short ferry ride makes it possible to cross the river with the bikes to Ayamonte, in Andalusia. So close and so different from its Portuguese neighbor, this foray into Spain allows us to better understand what links and separates these two regions, these two Iberian countries. From the "ramblas" of Ayamonte, a cycle path leads you to Isla Christina, a peninsula appreciated for its long beaches. Then you return by boat to Vila Real de Santo Antonio and on trails you make your way through a large pine forest bordering the coast. Be careful not to run over a chameleon in this forest refuge for biodiversity!

The trip ends after breakfast with a transfer back to Faro.
