Cycle along the Danube

Arrival in Schärding and check-in at your hotel. You can get to Schärding by train or bus from Vienna. Try the Austrian cuisine at one of the many restaurants in the city. You can also choose to spend the first night in Passau, please let us know at the time of booking.

From Schärding you quickly reach Passau along the Inn River cycle path. Take time to visit Passau's city center and St. Stephen's Cathedral with Europe's largest church organ (18,000 pipes) before setting off along the Danube cycle path towards your accommodation in the upper Danube valley.

Today's first highlight is the river bend at Schlögen - "Schlögener Donauschlinge" - where the bedrock has forced the river into an extremely tight curve. In Aschach the valley opens up and you cycle through the fertile Eferding. Take a break at the monastery in Wilhering before pedaling the last stretch towards Linz, Austria's second largest city which offers a beautiful city center with among other things the Neuer Dom and Hauptplatz.

Past Linz you cycle through rural agricultural countryside. In Mauthausen the concentration camp memorial site reminds of a dark chapter in history. The town of Grein attracts with Greinburg castle, its theater and its maritime museum.

Through romantic Strudengau you cycle to the ancient Roman town of Ybbs. Here begins Nibelungengau and in the distance you see the pilgrimage church Maria Taferl which towers over the Danube valley. In Melk a visit to the Benedictine monastery church is recommended and in the idyllic Wachau region you will find several places to pause. Your accommodation is somewhere between Maria Taferl and Spitz.

One of the trip's highlights is Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Europe's most beautiful river valleys, which stretches between Melk and Krems. The area is characterized by extensive wine-growing terraces and picturesque villages like Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein. Take the opportunity to stop at one of the many small taverns, so-called Heurigen, where you can enjoy local wines and homemade delicacies in a relaxed atmosphere.

Accommodation in Traismauer/Tulln, sometimes also in Krems/Mautern 

After Krems the Danube widens into the Tullnerfeld area, with the garden city of Tulln at its center. Klosterneuburg, with its Augustinian monastery housing the famous Verdun Altar and other cultural treasures, is another noteworthy stop along the way. 

The trip's final destination is Vienna, Austria's capital and one of the world's most beautiful cities. A walk through the city is like a journey through time, from St. Stephen's Cathedral to Hofburg, Schönbrunn Palace and Belvedere. 

The cycling distance can be shortened by taking the train (every half hour) from Krems to Tulln or from Tulln/Klosterneuburg to Vienna.
