Coastal Walking in Cornwall - Penzance to Mevagissey

Arrival in Marazion on your own. The town claims to be the oldest in Britain and was called Ictis by the Romans, which indicates that the area was a trading place for tin in ancient times. The town has an active community of artists whose work you can see in many of the galleries.

Your first walking day takes you from Mounts Bay with views over St. Michael's Mount. This ancient monastery which is now a manor house has a timeless attraction and was traditionally linked to Mont St. Michel in Brittany. Around the corner from the bay you follow cliffs and remains of old tin mines. After passing several coves associated with smuggling you reach Porthleven. A beautiful fishing and small boat harbor where you can take the opportunity to enjoy a good seafood dinner.

Via the fantastic Kynance Cove and the beautiful village of Mullion you walk along some of the best hiking routes in the area. You soon reach Britain's southernmost point "The Lizard" where you will hopefully be rewarded with an unforgettable sunset.

Today you pass the traditional fishing village of Coverack. You can also make a detour from the coast to St Keverne to visit its pleasant village square or the churchyard where over 400 shipwreck victims from the nearby Manacle Reef are buried.

A somewhat longer walking day with the possibility to shorten the route by taking a taxi to Gillan. From Gillan you walk to Nare point and then across Helford Passage. A lunch stop is advantageously made at the pub near Frenchman's Creek before you follow the beautiful Helford River and the short way to the impressive Trebah Gardens. You then enter Falmouth, the largest town along your route.

The day offers a scenic walk that begins with a ferry trip from Falmouth to St Mawes, a pleasant yacht harbor at the end of Roseland Peninsula. Along the route you pass Caerhays castle and its beautiful gardens, then continue through Varyan, known for its thatched roofs and round houses. Finally you come to the discreet beauty that is Portloe.

From Portloe you make your way all the way to Mevagissey via Portholland Cove and Dodman Point. The last day offers ups and downs with fantastic views over the coast.
